On this page, I invite you to read the heartwarming story of the Chihuahua mix that is the inspiration behind Anew's Tale. His story is, to say the least, inspiring. And, it shows that friendship can never be thrown away. Below this photo, you will be able to read Anew's Tale!

I guess you could say I was in the right place at exactly the right time. It was April 9, 2007 when I went to the animal shelter where I would first see Anew. This is his story.
I had not been to an animal kennel in ages, and thought the whole thing would be such fun. After all, I am an animal lover, and kennels are FILLED with cute animals. I was so excited as I got out of the car at the shelter. However, my happiness left as soon as I went in the kennel.
This was not a fun place. This was nothing to have gotten excited about. Yes, there were many animals at the kennel. But, their cuteness was mixed with sadness, and loneliness. This was a sad place.
The first (and only, as it turns out) area I went to while at the kennel was a small room with a sign that read Puppies & Small Dogs. Upon entering, I was bombarded with the sounds o f echoing barks. So many cute little dogs, rushing to the fronts of their cages, with tails wagging. But, it was not one of the tail-wagging, barking dogs that got my attention. Rather, it was a dog in a top cage, who did not bark. He did not rush to the front of his cage. Rather, he remained silent, and in the back of his confine. He looked out at me as I came in, and I knew. I had to hold him.
As he was pulled out of his cage, I noticed something I had not before. A cast, on one of his front legs. He was handed to me, and he snuggled into my arms, and looked up at me with eyes that simply said, Please, take me home. It was as I held him that I knew...I had to adopt him.
As I filled out the forms I was told that the cast on his leg was a soft cast, concealing nothing more than just a sprain, which would heal on its own. After filling out the paperwork, I was told he must stay with the kennel for two days to get fixed, and make sure everything was okay.
As I left the kennel, I felt happy. I had just adopted the most precious dog I had ever seen. I had saved him. My happiness did not long, however.
When I got home, I noticed a message on my answering machine. It was from the kennel. The message said that the cast did NOT conceal a sprain, as I was originally told, but rather, a compound fracture, which would be too pricey for me to get treated. The total...$850.oo. The message also informed me that, should I not be able to pay for the medical costs, he would be put down.
MY DOG WOULD DIE!
Determination set in, and I made calls to numerous nonprofit foundations, such as ASPCA, Actors & Others, IMOM, RUFF, and more, asking for help. I knew I had fight for him. And, I am happy I did.
It the last hour of his life, many of the organizations I had called, called me back. They told me that they were going to donate funds to help me cover the cost of his medical bill. They helped me save my dog.
Anew's story is not that uncommon. That is a sad thing. And, I know that he was one of the lucky ones. Sadly, many animals in similar circumstances do not get the same happy ending. And, that is why Anew's Tale has been founded. we strive to help other animals have the same happy ending as Anew.
